Our Wedding Planning: Part 5 // Music

Music is such an important part of our every day lives so it was always going to be a big factor for our wedding day. It's such a personal, powerful thing.

Some of our choices for songs for major parts of the day came really easily to us and there were a couple that we took a while to decide on.

Walking down the aisle

This is such a big moment and I wanted a song that wouldn't overshadow the emotion but would suit the gravity of the situation. The words in the song are obviously an important factor as well. One of my favourite artists is Maggie Rogers - her voice is breathtakingly beautiful and has such a sense of calm.

Our Choice: Maggie Rogers - Dog Years

Below are some of the words from the song - I think you'll agree they are beautiful and so appropriate for a wedding. The composition of the song also suits perfectly. Do yourself a favour and listen to this one. If not for walking down the aisle, it definitely deserves a place in your wedding day playlist.

I spend my time daydreaming
As sure as the sea
It's just you and me

And if you had a bad week
Just let me touch your cheek
Oh, and I'll be there waiting
When you get frustrated
I know things are changing
But, darling, I'm saying
I'll be singing you in all of my songs

Come what may
I'll still stay inside your mind
For all of time

Signing the Registry

This song was one that we wanted to include in the day but didn't feel it suited any other big moment. We've got memories of listening to it having coffee in Venice, while we were travelling Europe in 2017. It has such a good feel to it and a celebratory vibe that suited being played in the background while we were making it official and our guests mingled.

Our Choice:
Al Green - Let's Stay Together

Below are some of the words from the song. It definitely suits being included in your wedding day and would even make a great first dance song.

I, I'm I'm so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
Cause you make me feel so brand new
And I want to spend my life with you

Recessional

We wanted this song to be a bit more upbeat as we were going to have just been announced as Mr + Mrs! Jake's Dad is a huge Queen fan so he has a lot of childhood memories of listening to Queen or it always being on in the background. It only made sense to use this song for walking back down the aisle as husband and wife, while our friends and family cheered us on.

Our Choice: Queen - You're My Best Friend

Below are some of the words from the song. It's got such a happy, cheery vibe with the one and only Freddie Mercury's voice.

Ooh you're the best friend that I ever had
I've been with you such a long time
You're my sunshine and I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
Oh you're my best friend

Bridal Party Entrance

This was such an important song for us to choose as it was going to really kick start the party vibe for the night. We had a big bridal party (5 bridesmaids + 5 groomsmen) so it needed to be a pretty long song to have enough time for everyone to be introduced. We wanted to make sure this song was one that would make our friends and family excited and get them out of their seats. And that it did. They were so loud and cheered every single one of us as our MC, Sarah introduced us all.

Our Choice: Kungs, Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl

Hearing it now just takes us back to that moment and makes us so happy. It has such a good celebratory vibe. The words for this one didn't matter as much and the composition of the song was perfect in terms of timing of introducing our bridal party, building up to our introduction. We entered around 1:03 if you're listening ;) We can't wait to get our video back and relive this part of the day over and over again.

First Dance

This was probably the song that took us the longest to decide. All along we knew we wanted to include this artist in our day because it was such a big part of both of our childhoods and has been for our relationship too. There's been many nights dancing in the kitchen to the Bee Gees - they've been part of so many happy memories. For most of our planning, we thought we wanted to have an upbeat first dance song because that's the type of music we listen to most of the time. It was about a month out from the wedding and Jake mentioned he thought we should have a slower song because it would probably be one of our only chances to have a quiet moment, just us two. When chatting to our DJ, he suggested doing a mix for our first dance so we could start out with the slower song and then mix in to the faster song we'd been planning to use all along. That's what we decided to do and we couldn't be happier with how it all worked out.

Our Choice: Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love & More Than A Woman

Exit

We wanted this song to be a fun, upbeat one that would be the icing on the cake. We also needed it to be not too enticing that people would want to stay on the dancefloor. Jake's brother ended up grabbing the mic and getting everyone to create a tunnel for us to run through and it was such a nice way to end the night with this song playing in the background.

Our Choice: Caribou - Can't Do Without You
